On Sunday 25 May, coinciding with World Africa Day, Hondarribia will host the first edition of the Afrika Eguna festival, an initiative organised by the Mankosengal and Saharawi women's associations, with the support of the City Council. The event is presented as a space for intercultural and political encounters that puts the voices and rights of African women at the centre, from a feminist, intersectional and decolonial perspective. The programme kicked off on Monday with a round table on sisterhood networks and feminist leadership, where Senegalese and local women shared experiences and knowledge to build bridges of solidarity.

With a focus on social transformation and global justice, the festival proposes activities that question the hierarchies of public space and promote inclusive education based on cultural diversity. From an intercultural itinerary through the streets of the city to workshops on braiding, turban making and writing in Wolof and Basque, Afrika Eguna is committed to making female migration and the multiple forms of cultural resistance visible. The day will culminate with Senegalese gastronomy, music and traditional sports exhibitions, consolidating a space for dialogue between communities and reinforcing the role of women as protagonists of change.
