In a major diplomatic shift, Kenya inaugurated its first embassy in Morocco on Monday, with a ceremony in Rabat attended by the Moroccan Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita, and the first secretary of the Kenyan cabinet, Musalia Mudavadi. The event symbolises the strengthening of bilateral relations that are celebrating six decades, and which are now consolidated with the signing of five cooperation agreements in key areas such as housing, youth, trade and diplomatic training.
During the two-day official visit, Nairobi took a decisive step by recognising Morocco's Autonomy Plan as the only viable way to resolve the Western Sahara conflict, reversing its previous support for the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. This change marks the end of a period of tension and opens a new phase of strategic partnership, driven by President William Ruto's administration, which appointed Jessica Muthoni Gakinya as the first Kenyan ambassador to Rabat as early as 2024.
