In recent years, the foreign population has played a decisive role in the evolution of the Spanish labour market. According to an analysis published by the Bank of Spain, employment growth since 2019 has been mostly concentrated in foreign workers, who have made a significant contribution to offsetting the effects of demographic ageing and the stagnation of the national labour force.
The study points out that this contribution has been particularly relevant in sectors with a high demand for labour, such as the hotel and catering, agriculture and care sectors, where foreign workers have a growing share. Furthermore, the report warns of the need for policies that facilitate the labour integration of these groups and promote effective management of migratory flows, in a context in which the dynamism of employment could depend, to a large extent, on this source of population growth.
