Maryam Bukar Hassan, Nigerian-born artist and activist, was appointed the first UN Global Peace Advocate in July.

The United Nations has appointed Maryam Bukar Hassan as its first Global Advocate for Peace, a new role focused on promoting inclusive peace on a global scale.

Hassan, born in northern Nigeria, is a renowned spoken word artist and social activist. For years, she has used poetry as a vehicle to promote women's rights and youth participation in reconciliation processes.

With this appointment, the poet takes on the mission of making visible the efforts of women and youth in building peaceful societies. Her work is directly linked to two key UN initiatives: the Women, Peace and Security and the Youth, Peace and Security agendas.

The official launch took place in July at an international event that combined art, music and speeches in favour of cross-cultural understanding. On that stage, Hassan gave a moving recital focusing on collective action as the basis for lasting transformations.

Beyond symbolism, his figure represents a clear commitment to incorporate creative voices into the global dialogue. His career combines artistic experience, social commitment and deep knowledge of contexts marked by conflict.

In his new position, he is expected to promote campaigns, meetings and listening spaces where communities can imagine more just futures. For Hassan, peace is not a destination, but a path that is built with words, participation and courage.
