Exercise helps prevent the onset of osteoporosis and improves muscle and bone quality.
Hospiten recommends sport and strength training for the whole population, especially for women going through the menopause, in order to obtain benefits that contribute to an improvement in the quality of life of patients.
Dr Cristina Fernández-Valencia, a specialist in Traumatology at Hospiten Roca, explains that physical exercise brings specific benefits in terms of bone, muscle and metabolism. "Regular exercise is key to preventing sarcopenia, which occurs when muscle mass is lost. It also helps to improve bone density, strengthening bones and reducing the risk of osteoporosis," he comments.
According to the expert, physical exercise is very important for anyone at any age, but during the menopausal period it is crucial. "Especially if we are talking about strength training, as it improves muscle and bone quality as well as lowering blood pressure and controlling insulin sensitivity," she says.
This is because this practice activates mechanical tension, reducing muscle damage and metabolic stress, which are the main causes of muscle hypertrophy or muscle growth. The traumatologist also points out that on a systemic level "hormones such as adrenaline, noradrenaline and endorphins are released, which increase glucose, blood flow and endurance", and the nervous system "responds with faster and more efficient communication, while the body adapts to eliminate cellular waste and improve performance".
For all these reasons, the doctor recommends including strength exercises three to four times a week, and advises doing compound exercises to treat several muscle groups at the same time. "She also recommends exercises with body weight, such as push-ups or planks, as well as exercises with elastic bands or free weights," says Fernández-Valencia.
Similarly, he stresses that it is important to perform any type of exercise under the supervision of a professional who designs an adapted training plan that avoids possible injuries caused by poor execution, as well as maintaining a balanced diet: "Protein builds and repairs muscle, calcium is essential for muscle contraction and bone health, and vitamin D is crucial for calcium absorption," he concludes.
Hospiten reaffirms its commitment to promoting physical activity, as it can prevent possible complications in women with menopause.
