Africa was consolidated in 2024 as the main source of liquefied natural gas (LNG) for Galicia. Of the 32 vessels unloaded at the Reganosa plant in Mugardos, 17 came from Algeria and Nigeria. The United States came in second place with 10 vessels, its highest ever since Galicia began importing gas by fracking in 2016.

African participation in supply thus recovers the prominence lost to Russia and the US in previous years. The number of ships from Algeria stands out, a country from which gas could also arrive by pipeline, a less polluting option than LNG. The Mugardos regasification plant, controlled by the Tojeiro Group with the participation of the Algerian Sonatrach (11.74%) and the Xunta, continues to be key to the entry of gas into Galicia.

In contrast, imports from Russia fell from 20 vessels in 2023 to only 2 in 2024. Despite record LNG tanker offloadings, the total gas inflow through Mugardos fell by 21% compared to the previous year. Cargoes also arrived from Trinidad and Tobago and Qatar.
