António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations.

On the occasion of Africa Day, the UN Secretary-General has highlighted the continent's dynamism, highlighting its cultural diversity, its growing role in technological innovation and its drive for renewable energy. Africa, with its young and vibrant population, is moving with determination towards greater economic integration, as demonstrated by the launch of the African Continental Free Trade Area, which opens up new prospects for employment and development for millions of people.

However, the message also underlined the urgent need to address the deep wounds that remain from slavery, colonialism and structural racism. The Secretary-General reiterated his support for restorative justice based on accountability and fairness, and called for a strengthened African presence in global decision-making spaces, such as the Security Council, as well as reform of the international financial system. He also advocated the ethical use of emerging technologies and the prioritisation of the continent's natural resources for the benefit of its own people.
