Africa is moving towards becoming a major player in the emerging green hydrogen sector, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said as he opened the African Green Hydrogen Summit. The combination of abundant renewable resources and large tracts of land put the continent in an advantageous position to attract investment, boost industrialisation and generate employment, he said.
Currently, more than 50 large-scale projects are under development in several African countries, including initiatives in South Africa, Mauritania and Morocco. Ramaphosa stressed the need for strong regulatory frameworks, regional certification systems and export mechanisms to ensure the success of the sector. While acknowledging challenges such as high capital costs and competition with traditional energy sources, he reaffirmed Africa's commitment to leading the global energy transition.
