In a continent marked by labour informality, structural challenges and a youth crying out for opportunities, Akhator Joel Odigie takes a key role in driving a transformative trade union agenda. Since his election as ITUC-Africa general secretary in November 2023, he is determinedly leading an organisation that represents more than 17 million workers in 52 countries, defending decent work and social justice in one of the most complex contexts in the world.

In this exclusive interview with Equal Times, Odigie speaks candidly about the challenges facing African trade unionism, the impact of global geopolitical decisions on local employment and the urgent need for effective intra-African trade integration. He also discusses how new generations can revitalise the trade union movement and how to confront, from within and outside the continent, the pressures of a profoundly unequal global economic system.
