"Barcelona or die": Risking life and limb to get to Europe

"Barcelona or death", a slogan of desperation for young Senegalese people

Thousands of young Senegalese risk their lives every year in the dangerous sea crossing to the Canary Islands, driven by lack of opportunities, social pressure and the illusion of a better life in Europe.

The fishing crisis, exacerbated by foreign overexploitation and climate change, has left entire villages without livelihoods. Despite promises by Senegal's new government to create jobs and curb emigration, departures continue to increase.

The women, mothers, wives and sisters, are left behind, watching their loved ones depart with no guarantee of return, under the desperate slogan: "Barcelona or death". Tracy McVeigh tells the story in The Guardian.
