Bobi Wine has become the most prominent figure in the Ugandan opposition. A former pop star raised in a poor neighbourhood, his leap into politics in 2017 was seen as a break with the traditional elite linked to President Museveni, in power since 1986. With a discourse focused on social inequalities and the aspirations of the slums, he swept the parliamentary elections in his district with 78 % of the vote. In 2021, he ran for president against a campaign marked by repression, but his message struck a chord with a young generation that had hitherto remained on the margins of political life.
The website mundonegro has published an interesting interview with him, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi. He did not manage to defeat Museveni at the polls, but he has initiated a transformation that could redraw the political map of Uganda. We recommend reading it.
