The president of the Canary Islands Government, Fernando Clavijo, presented the new "Canary Islands-Africa Strategy" at Casa África, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. This initiative seeks to strengthen cooperation with the African continent in key areas such as science, technology, innovation and sustainable development.
During the event, Clavijo stressed the importance of connecting the education, industry and innovation ecosystems of both regions to tackle shared challenges, such as climate change, access to essential resources and migration. He also advocated speeding up visas and recovering direct maritime connections with African countries, such as Mauritania, to facilitate commercial and cultural exchanges.
The strategy also foresees the creation of a network of collaboration between knowledge centres in the Canary Islands and Africa, with a special focus on renewable energies, health, water and circular economy.
With this initiative, the Government of the Canary Islands reaffirms its commitment to joint development and the strengthening of economic, scientific and cultural ties with the neighbouring continent.
