Conference on the situation in the Sahel organised by the Government of the Canary Islands.
Conference on the situation in the Sahel organised by the Government of the Canary Islands.

On 3 September, the Canary Islands Government will hold a conference to analyse the situation in the Sahel and its repercussions on migratory flows.

Instability in the African region, fuelled by jihadist advances, institutional weaknesses and the effects of climate change, is increasing the outflow of people to the archipelago.

President Fernando Clavijo expressed his concern over the lack of a clear EU strategy and called for greater cooperation to promote African stability and development.

The event is organised by the Innovation for Responsible Island Migration Management (IRLab) team and will be attended by experts in Sahelian politics and security.

In parallel, the Canary Islands has promoted, together with fifty NGOs, a Guide of Good Practices aimed at improving the care and transition to adult life of migrant minors.

The document proposes strengthening coordination between administrations, guaranteeing comprehensive protection and offering alternatives for the social and labour integration of those who come of age on the islands.
