A Chinese couple has built a successful business in Africa, generating $450 million a year by selling nappies and hygiene products. Their company, Sunda International Group, offers quality products at affordable prices, reaching even the most remote areas of the continent.
Shen Yanchang and Yang Yanjuan, graduates of Harbin Engineering University, started their business venture in 2000. Following a request from a Nigerian supplier to purchase $200,000 worth of products, they identified a business opportunity in the African market.
Initially focused on exporting commodities and construction materials, in 2009 they launched the Softcare brand, specialising in nappies and sanitary napkins. Their aim was to offer affordable alternatives to Western products, which were inaccessible to many African families.
The company has experienced remarkable growth, with a presence in countries such as Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa. Their success is attributed to a combination of competitive pricing and an efficient distribution network. In addition to their business success, Shen and Yang have been recognised for their social commitment. They have contributed to improving feminine hygiene in Africa by providing products that dignify women and improve their quality of life.
The story of this Chinese couple highlights how an entrepreneurial vision can transform a basic need into a successful business opportunity, while contributing to the well-being of developing communities.
