The University of La Laguna hosted a new edition of Africa Day at the Guajara Campus, an event organised by the Centre for African Studies which has become a reference point for intercultural dialogue. Between 10:00 and 19:00 on Wednesday 28th, there were presentations and activities celebrating the diversity of the neighbouring continent. Registration was free and open to the entire community. The day began with a forum dedicated to the role of African women, followed by the inauguration of the Ruta Canaria de Migración memorial, in memory of the patera destroyed by an act of vandalism, which symbolises the resilience of those who undertake the Atlantic crossing. During the meeting, mention was made of the capsizing of a skiff a few metres from land, experienced during the morning in the port of La Restinga, on the island of El Hierro, with all those present regretting such a tragic accident, while at the same time asking to find out what caused it and to prevent something like this from happening again.
The Ubuntu dialogue circle promoted a reflection on community and solidarity, before giving way to a lunch with African flavours. In the afternoon, the academic session "Secrets of Africa" dealt with subjects such as slavery in the Canary Islands, Adinkra iconography and African migrations. The opening address by the historian Manuel Lobo Cabrera was a highlight. At the same time, a workshop on African languages was held in front of the Central Library. The day ended with a festive celebration with African music and dances, inviting active participation and recognition of the continent's cultural wealth.
