The Canary Islands Immigration Forum has given the green light to the new Canary Islands Plan for Immigration and Intercultural Coexistence, which will have an investment of more than 27 million euros. The document includes 59 measures focused on key areas such as education, health, employment, housing and social services.
The Councillor for Social Welfare, Candelaria Delgado, stressed that this is "a firm step towards continuing to build a welcoming Canary Islands that is a benchmark in the management of diversity". During the plenary session held this Friday, she emphasised that the agreement goes beyond good intentions and is materialised in real actions within the programmes that make up the plan.
The initiative has the active involvement of multiple administrations, from island councils to the European Union, which reinforces its cross-cutting and shared nature.
The process of drawing up the plan has been extensive and participatory. Nearly a thousand people took part in workshops, consultations and meetings held on the eight inhabited islands. According to the Director General of Social Services, Elisabet Santana, it is a pioneering document after more than twenty years without specific planning. Moreover, its objectives are aligned with the 2030 Agenda and with a focus on human rights.
The plan is structured around nine areas of action and includes 29 specific objectives. Each measure has been designed taking into account the migratory reality of the archipelago and the particularities of each island. The funding will be distributed among the different ministries involved, which will allow for a more coordinated and effective implementation.
