Spain boosts legal migration with day labourers trained at origin

Spain is strengthening its commitment to orderly and safe migration through the GECCO programme, an initiative that allows agricultural workers to be recruited in their countries of origin, guaranteeing labour rights and decent conditions.

The plan, which is active in countries such as Morocco and Senegal, promotes the selection and training of seasonal workers before their arrival in the Spanish countryside. In the last edition, held in Dakar, dozens of Senegalese day labourers attended information sessions prior to their departure.

Those selected are granted a four-year work permit, which allows them to be employed for nine months of the year. At the end of each season, workers must return home and certify their return, a key condition for retaining the permit and being eligible for future campaigns.

The programme, which places special emphasis on female participation, aims to be a model of circular, legal and guaranteed labour mobility.
