The announcement of the possible return of Ghana Airways has generated great excitement in the country. Foreign Minister Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa confirmed during an official visit to Morocco that President John Mahama is determined to relaunch the national airline as part of an ambitious plan to revive Ghana's airline industry.
The news has been enthusiastically received by many citizens on social media, who are celebrating the possibility of having their own flag carrier again. Many see the project as an opportunity to improve regional connectivity and boost tourism and business, as long as efficient management and proper maintenance are guaranteed.
However, there has been no shortage of critical voices. Some users expressed doubts about the economic viability of the plan, recalling previous failures and questioning whether the lessons of the past have been learned. The sustainability of the model, the need for public-private partnerships and responsible management will be key to ensure that this return does not become a financial burden for the state.
Ghana Airways operated as the country's flagship airline from its home base at Kotoka International Airport in Accra until it ceased operations in 2004 after being liquidated. Following its demise, the government launched a new joint venture, Ghana International Airlines, a partnership between the state and US businessmen. However, this initiative was also short-lived and ceased operations in 2010.
