José Segura will continue at the head of Casa África after being re-elected director general during the 36th meeting of the institution's Governing Council. The appointment, unanimously supported by the three consortium members (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of the Canary Islands and the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria), reinforces the continuity of the project initiated by the socialist from Tenerife in March 2019.
During the meeting, held at Casa África's headquarters in the capital of Gran Canaria, the Annual Accounts for 2024 were also approved, with a budget execution of 96.77 % on a total of just over two million euros. Likewise, the report on compliance with the Strategic Plan 2022-2024 was validated, which reached a degree of execution of 80.98 %, as well as the Annual Action Plan 2024, executed at 95.88 %.
The Council was chaired by the Director General for Relations with Africa of the Canary Islands Government, Luis Padilla Macabeo, representing President Fernando Clavijo. Also taking part were officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, such as Ximena Bartolomé (Africa), Ana Esmeralda Martínez (Economic Diplomacy) and Cecilia García (Cooperation with Africa). Francisco Hernández Spínola, the deputy mayor of the capital, attended on behalf of Mayor Carolina Darias.
Segura, ex-delegate of the Government in the Canary Islands and with an extensive political career, faces this new stage with the aim of consolidating Casa África as a strategic bridge between Spain and the African continent. During his tenure, the entity has strengthened its profile as an instrument of public diplomacy and foreign projection.
The unanimous support for its continuity comes in a context of growing institutional interest in Africa, a key region in the areas of migration, trade, culture and security. Casa África is thus positioned as a key tool for the State's foreign action from the Canary Islands.
