The Rwandan capital is moving forward in its digitalisation plan with the return of free Wi-Fi on city buses. The initiative is part of the “Smart Kigali” project, which has been underway since 2013.
The service already covers vehicles of the Royal Express, KBS and RFTC companies. In a first phase, around 100 buses have been equipped and the network will be gradually expanded.
The objective is clear: to guarantee residents and visitors free Internet access on daily commutes and at strategic points in the city, such as parks and stations.
The connection uses 4G LTE technology, which already reaches more than half of the fleet. According to the Ministry of ICT and Innovation, coverage will be extended to all operators in the coming months.
This deployment is part of the national strategy Vision 2020 and Vision 2050, which aims to transform Rwanda into an economy based on knowledge and innovation.
For users, the measure means surfing, working or making video calls while crossing the hills of Kigali. For the country, it consolidates its position as a technology leader in East Africa.
