The City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Casa África have launched a training course in emergency management aimed at professionals from Cape Verde. The mayoress, Carolina Darias, inaugurated the initiative this Sunday, welcoming more than 40 participants in a virtual session.
The training, of a theoretical nature and lasting four weeks, will focus on the response to natural disasters and will be completed with a practical phase in the Cape Verdean archipelago next July. During this phase, municipal technicians will share experiences in the field with local Civil Protection and Fire Brigades.
The project, promoted by the Department of Security, Coexistence and Culture in collaboration with the Spanish Embassy in Cape Verde and the Canary Islands Foundation for External Action, aims to strengthen operational capabilities in the event of risks such as floods, forest fires or earthquakes.
During the opening, Darias highlighted the importance of international cooperation in the face of the challenge of climate change, underlining the links between the Canary Islands and Cape Verde due to their geographical and climatic similarities. For his part, Casa África's secretary general, Justo Artiles, highlighted the value of this type of initiative to strengthen collaboration networks in contexts of growing vulnerability.
