Today, 2 July, marks a century since the birth of Patrice Lumumba, Congolese independence leader and symbol of the African struggle against colonialism. His figure, still uncomfortable for some, represents the voice of a continent that demanded justice and sovereignty.
«Africans, let us rise up, Africans, let us unite,» cried Lumumba. His words, spoken in the midst of the independence process, still resonate strongly in contemporary Africa. His ideal was clear: to transform the continent into a space of freedom and dignity.
However, his dream was violently interrupted. Interests outside the Congolese people cut short his political project just months after independence was proclaimed. Lumumba was assassinated in 1961, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire social and political movements today.
On the centenary of his birth, Casa África joins the tribute with the publication of the book Patrice Lumumba. Tras las sombras de la independencia, a work by @jaracbb and Pablo Arconada, published by Libros de la Catarata. The title becomes part of its Essay Collection.
The publication invites you to learn more about Lumumba and the context that surrounded him. A story that speaks not only of one man, but of the destiny of an entire continent.
With this work, Casa África reinforces its commitment to the continent's historical memory and gives visibility to the voices that fought - and continue to fight - for a free Africa.
