Will Nigeria host an F1 Grand Prix in Abuja?
Will Nigeria host an F1 Grand Prix in Abuja?

Nigeria has formalised its bid to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix in Abuja. The bid is backed by the government and promoted by Opus Race Promotions, a company headed by former England footballer Marvin Sordell.

If approved by the FIA and the championship organisers, the project would mark the return of motorsport's premier class to the African continent, which has been absent since the 1993 Grand Prix of South Africa.

Nigerian sporting authorities hope the event will serve as a catalyst for tourism and infrastructure investment. The plan calls for the construction of a permanent circuit, karting academies and a motorsport museum in the federal capital.

The bid was officially launched in May and has begun talks with Formula 1 president Stefano Domenicali. According to local sources, government backing includes tax facilities and logistical support to attract private investment.

Nigeria is competing with other African countries also seeking a place on the calendar, including South Africa, Morocco and Rwanda. The final decision could be known in the coming months, with a view to planning for the season ahead.
