Nigeria halts shea exports to boost local industry

El Gobierno de Nigeria ha suspendido durante seis meses la exportación de nueces de karité sin procesar, insumo esencial en cosmética y cuidado personal.

La medida busca transformar al país en referente mundial de manteca de karité, aceites y derivados, en lugar de limitarse a la venta de materia prima.

Nigeria concentra cerca del 40% de la producción global de nueces, pero apenas participa en el mercado internacional de productos elaborados a partir de ellas.

La estrategia sigue la senda de varios países de África occidental que ya restringen exportaciones, con el fin de proteger y desarrollar sus industrias nacionales.

El Ejecutivo nigeriano confía en que este giro multiplique ingresos en los próximos años y afiance nuevas alianzas comerciales con mercados emergentes como Brasil.
