The International Contemporary Dance Festival of the Canary Islands, MASDANZA, opens its 30th edition with a unique event: the premiere of "Black", the latest creation by the Ivorian Oulouy, which will be presented on Thursday the 2nd of October in the courtyard of Casa África.
The performance marks the beginning of a programme that will run until 26 October in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, consolidating the capital as a meeting point for contemporary dance on an international scale.
Oulouy, a reference on the African urban scene, proposes in "Black" a choreographic experience that explores collective memory and black identity, interweaving gestures of resistance and expressions of freedom. His proposal is based on the strength of movement rather than on scenic artifice, inviting the audience to a direct and unadorned reflection.
The collaboration between MASDANZA and Casa África is part of the Africa in Movement programme, an initiative aimed at strengthening the visibility of the continent's creators in European venues. The alliance allows African artists to occupy a prominent place in one of the most veteran festivals on the Spanish scene.
"Black" draws on sounds that range from combative jazz to vindictive hip hop, tracing a sonic journey that accompanies the corporal gesture on its journey through violence, emancipation and the right to exist without labels.
Admission will be free until full capacity is reached, with punctuality as a requirement to enjoy one of the most eagerly awaited proposals of this edition.
