A song by Oumou Sangaré goes viral almost thirty years later.

Malian music legend Oumou Sangaré has seen his 1996 song “Kun Fe Ko” go viral in Nigeria almost three decades after its release.

The revival of the song came about through a digital challenge, where Nigerian creators reinterpreted the song in short videos, bringing the traditional rhythms to new young audiences.

Sangaré expressed her gratitude to the Nigerian public and used the occasion to pose an open question: which Nigerian artist should accompany her on an official remix of the song.

The artist seeks to fuse the bambara tradition with contemporary Nigerian sounds, exploring collaborations that unite the musical richness of both countries.

Fans and musicians have begun to put forward names, from established voices to young talents, raising expectations about a possible project that will cross musical boundaries.

This phenomenon is evidence of how classical African music can find relevance again thanks to digital platforms, connecting history, culture and new generations in the same creative pulse.
