Rwanda has positioned itself as one of the cleanest countries in the world, and it is no coincidence. Since 2008, this African nation has banned the use of plastic bags, a pioneering measure that is so rigorously applied that tourists' suitcases are even checked to ensure that they do not bring in this polluting material.
This small landlocked country, with just over 26,000 km² and more than 12 million inhabitants, has managed to stand out not only for its population density, but also for its strong commitment to the environment. Every last Saturday of the month, the population participates in Umuganda, a mandatory day of community service dedicated to cleaning and improving public spaces.
While Africa is experiencing a post-pandemic tourism revival, Rwanda shines with its commitment to sustainability, natural landscapes and impressive wildlife.
