Attendees at the meeting on tourism issues between Senegal and the Canary Islands.

The Government of Senegal and an official delegation from the Canary Islands held a meeting in Dakar this week with the aim of moving towards a strategic agreement to strengthen the development of Senegalese tourism. The meeting, headed by the Senegalese Minister of Tourism and Crafts, Mountaga Diao, has allowed the first lines of a collaboration based on the experience of the Spanish archipelago as an international benchmark in the sector to be drawn up.

The visiting delegation was made up of authorities and institutional and business representatives, including the Spanish ambassador to Senegal, Dolores Ríos, and the director general for Africa of the Canary Islands Government, Luis Padilla. During the meeting, concrete proposals were put on the table to share know-how, boost the joint promotion of destinations and explore investments in tourism infrastructures.

Mountaga Diao emphasised the commitment of the Senegalese government to make tourism a key driver of sustainable development, and welcomed the interest shown in Spain and, in particular, in the Canary Islands. The country already has the presence of the Riu hotel group, which from 2022 will operate a 500-room complex on the Atlantic coast, a sign of Senegal's growing attractiveness as an emerging tourist destination.
