A few kilometres from Dakar, Lake Retba, known as Lac Rose, dazzles with its pink colour under the West African sun. The phenomenon is due to a microalgae called Dunaliella salina, which turns the water pink thanks to its adaptation to high salt concentrations.
Every day, the inhabitants extract salt from its waters, a traditional activity that coexists with the growing tourist interest in this unique natural site. Many compare it to a pastel version of the Dead Sea. But this spectacle is in Senegal, and it deserves to be seen at least once in a lifetime.
