The Councillor for Finance and Relations with the European Union, Matilde Asián, will sign an agreement on Tuesday 30th in Brussels to allocate 10 million euros to joint projects with African partners. The ceremony will take place at the headquarters of DG Regio and will be attended by its Director General, Themis Christophidou.
The agreement is part of the Interreg MAC programme, which promotes collaboration between the EU's outermost regions and neighbouring countries. The funding will go to initiatives that promote innovation, sustainability and institutional cooperation.
The Canary Islands is at the forefront of projects, seeking to strengthen economic and social ties with new African partners, including Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire and Sao Tome and Principe.
The programme allows up to 85% of the cost of projects to be covered, thus facilitating public and private sector participation in proposals aimed at green transition and sustainable mobility.
Matilde Asián stressed that this action reflects the archipelago's commitment to international cooperation and the building of lasting links between Europe and Africa. “It is an opportunity to generate real impact in our communities and partner countries,” she said.
With this agreement, the Canary Islands strengthens its role as an outermost region active on the international scene, consolidating a bridge that combines economic development, technological innovation and shared social action.
