The University of La Laguna (ULL) has strengthened its commitment to academic and cultural cooperation after its recent visit to Saint-Louis, in northern Senegal. The delegation from the Vice-Rectorate for Internationalisation and Cooperation met with the Action and Critical Study Group (GAEC Africa) to evaluate ongoing projects and explore new lines of work.
The meeting allowed to consolidate a collaboration initiated in 2024 and focused on critical education, sustainability and social inclusion. GAEC Africa, an Afro-decolonial laboratory and non-profit socio-educational collective, promotes critical humanities programmes, co-production of knowledge and popular education with the aim of promoting social, cultural and environmental justice.
During the 2024/25 academic year, this alliance generated initiatives that combined critical thinking, art and community action. These included the exhibition The Eyes of Water: Awakening, the 2nd Ndar Pan-African Street Food Festival, the tribute to Malcolm X: A Century of Revolution and the Jazz in Conversation cycle, consolidating a unique space for cooperation between the Canary Islands and Senegal.
The ULL also managed to position itself in strategic African and global environments linked to higher education, international cooperation and culture. Synergies with institutions such as the Université Gaston Berger, the Museum of Black Civilisations in Dakar, the AECID and academic institutions in the United States and Germany stand out.
During their last visit, both institutions agreed to open new avenues of collaboration, such as training in Wolof language and culture, the publication of a didactic manual and the next decolonial camp, supported by Senegalese and international organisations. With this agenda, the University of La Laguna consolidates its role as a strategic partner of Africa in the construction of critical and transformative academic networks.
