On 27 October, the University of Cape Verde will hold a solemn ceremony in which it will award the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa to professors José Gómez Soliño and Basilio Valladares Hernández, outstanding figures of the University of La Laguna.
The recognition comes as a result of a shared trajectory between the Canary Islands and Africa in terms of knowledge, research and university cooperation. Both academics have made a decisive contribution to strengthening ties between institutions in Macaronesia and the African continent.
Gómez Soliño, professor and former rector of the ULL, has been a constant promoter of cultural and linguistic dialogue between islands and African countries. His work in international projects has consolidated an academic vision committed to diversity and regional integration.
Valladares Hernández, founder of the University Institute of Tropical Diseases, has devoted his career to biomedical research and scientific dissemination. His work has positioned the Canary Islands as a benchmark in the study and prevention of emerging pathologies in tropical environments.
The ceremony will take place at the Convention Centre of the University of Cape Verde, where academic authorities, diplomatic representatives and members of the scientific community are expected to attend.
With this distinction, the Cape Verdean institution reinforces its commitment to the exchange of knowledge between the Atlantic archipelagos, recognising two teachers whose work has transcended borders and generations.
