The government of Burkina Faso has unveiled a five-year plan aimed at transforming the national economy and improving living conditions for the population. The program, considered one of the most ambitious in the Sahel, aims to reduce poverty, increase electrification, and raise life expectancy.<\/p>\n
The total budget amounts to $64 billion, an unprecedented figure in the recent history of the African nation. Authorities plan to finance a large part of the project with domestic revenue, following the nationalization of strategic sectors such as gold mining.<\/p>\n
President Ibrahim Traore, in power since 2022, has spearheaded an economic shift based on sovereignty and self-sufficiency. The break with France, the former colonial power, marked a turning point in the country's economic policy.<\/p>\n
According to the Ministry of Finance, two-thirds of the funds will come from state-owned enterprises and citizen participation mechanisms. The government argues that this model reduces dependence on external debt and strengthens control over national resources.<\/p>\n
The nationalization of several gold mines in 2025 has been key to sustaining this new economic approach. The rise in the international price of gold generated revenues exceeding $2 billion.<\/p>\n
With these resources, the country managed to reduce its domestic debt by approximately a quarter, improving its fiscal stability. At the same time, the government has strengthened its territorial control against armed groups, expanding its presence across much of the country.<\/p>\n
The plan's objectives include reducing poverty from 42% to 35% over the next five years. It also aims to increase life expectancy from 61 to 68 years and significantly expand the nation's electricity generation capacity.<\/p>\n
The Executive considers this plan a decisive step towards a more autonomous economic development, with greater industrialization and use of local resources.<\/p>\n
