The teaching project Enseñar África (Teaching Africa) arose as a joint response from Casa África, the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), the Government of the Canary Islands and other collaborating institutions, with the aim of improving knowledge about the African continent among Spanish teenagers. Since 2013, this initiative has worked to dismantle stereotypes and broaden the vision of Africa, showing its cultural, social and economic diversity through a didactic unit aimed at secondary school students. The educational proposal includes a Student's Book and a Teacher's Guide that address topics such as history, culture, demographics and current challenges of the continent, always highlighting the positive advances without ignoring the challenges.
This educational work has been very well received in many schools in the Canary Islands, leading to the creation of artistic and audiovisual materials produced by the students themselves, which are subsequently exhibited in annual exhibitions organised by Casa África in its Sahel room. Thus, the project not only encourages critical and plural learning, but also makes visible the creativity and commitment of Canarian youth to understand Africa from a close and realistic perspective, in line with the Gran Canaria Solidarity Programme and the continued support of various entities such as Binter, the Ramon Areces Foundation and the Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar.
